The English Language Institute was founded in 1941 as the first university-based ESL program of its kind and has since led the field of English for Academic Purposes research and instruction. Today, ELI is dedicated to serving the academic, linguistic, and cultural needs of members of the U-M community.
ELI provides a full range of courses and other types of language and academic support for international graduate students, visiting scholars, researchers, staff, and post-docs at U-M. We also offer a training for new international GSIs and teacher training courses for undergraduates interested in teaching English in local communities or abroad. Our classes are small, interactive, and provide students with extensive one-on-one feedback. Our curriculum is based on the latest research on the kinds of speaking and writing students need to achieve their academic and professional goals. Our faculty provide every student with a high-level of personalized guidance and support.
